Campus Visits: Erin
- Please describe two or three highlights that you have witnessed during your campus visits this fall?
- What has been an area of challenge that the ITSs need to address so that we can better support Goal #7 and your vision for the district?
Technology Badges (Football Helmet analogy): Linda
- You have previously stated that you would like to see teachers recognized for technology integration in their classrooms. The ITSs have put in place a number of initiatives such as Getting I.T. Right blogs, Technology Badges, and Campus Teacher Techie of the Week. Please tell us what you think would be a powerful motivator for all teachers with regard to recognition.
Devices and Software - Mark - We are very excited about the ninth grade initiative at RRHS and MHS. However, we need more devices and digital tools including online textbooks in our classrooms throughout the district for both instruction and state assessments. What is your perspective of the roadmap for increased access to these technology tools based on your involvement with the state, other districts, and our local governing bodies?
- Donna - We are promoting BYOD to help increase current access, and we know that a bond will be instrumental to the financial solution for gaining that increased access. What can we do to increase our chances of successfully adding more devices to all classrooms at all levels?
Instructional Technology Specialists (ITS): Daniel
- The campus ITSs want RRISD to be an exemplary district in the use of cutting edge technology and sending our students into the business and academic world prepared to meet challenges of the future. We recognize this can only be achieved through team efforts with all departments and campuses. The ITSs are working hard to integrate technology into the ARRC, co-present just-in-time trainings at district meetings, support instruction on campuses, recognize teachers who are doing a great job at integrating technology into the classroom, and support end-of-course exams and assessments. We welcome any suggestions you might have to increase our role as an integral and essential part of the instructional team.
~FYI
- TED t.v. Conference in Eanes ISD (JU) Doing it as a student conference – Laura Darden gave us the info about it. If you have students who want to participate, it will be in March. All the information is given in the link. List was mentioned as a FYI Digital Day coming up – see if there is something you may want to include for that

Angie asked Jan and Steve Burpee to push out an msi package for qr codes. What do we need – to read them was clarified so that a webcam to read them. Someone send MJ the one to use as a district. Someone else asked about YouTube. We need to stream videos now rather than stream them. There are several to choose from. Some work on campuses, some don’t-some lose quality. Mike uses AnyVideoConverter – free and works well. Mike B. wants a package for it.
- DAC Document (MJ) A- DAC Document (MJ)The DAC had lots of technology; Dr.Chavez had questions that had to have some responses. Notes displayed; we had some questions to followup; Responses were pointed out – websites being blocked and reasons, etc. One question was that only can be used for Lang Arts (from what campus? No one knew – Response was given to that. Another question;Could there be a standardized classroom at elementary level. How is Technology Disbursed? Bond funds or reserve funds that target tech initiatives How is equity determined? Ratio tried to remain as consistent as possible across the district. Computer ratio are determined for each campus; but number of students may change. Pointed out federal money for Title 1 schools can be used not to supplant local funds.
Question? How is it determined when each campus will be refreshed? Answer: 5 year refresh; 2015-16 no money Question :Teachers can’t text students; there is no policy for that. - ELA Presentation with Instructional Coaches (Michele and Krista)
They shared a web link to their ELA presentation http://smore.com/f6zv
- Elementary JIT (Leslie Long, Anita Oliver, Angie Hintz) Share where we saved our files of presentations or resources if we did. Remind them they are not stand alone presentations but just for the ITS as a reference of what was shared at the 90 min. trainings. More of a taste of an idea for the coming 9 weeks. http://goo.gl/bltnG Mention it was brought up about Web 2.0 tools some in beta form and some go to costing money, so it was brought to our attention again. If we could include generic or multiple examples of apps that do the same things. Coming up next JIT Dec. 4, 6, and 11th http://goo.gl/L3pxq
- Substitute Procedures (see links below) (Anne Mattingly) Anne showed document that is being used so subs will know they do have an account, etc. These documents are questions/answers so that subs will be able to have the information to streamline the login procedure.Q drive has a folder; recommended to have a link that they can access from Q drive. Since sub is part of the domain, sub should have access to the q drive.
- iStation Status (RA) Think Through Math – 3-8th grade; online and ready to use. Linda Nichols presented at elem principals to inform them of this. iStation –Little glitch - few weeks ago, Robert decided to upload students first, so the teachers automatically got an email from Robert- There is an msi file to push out software; but, problem arose that anyone had to put in the code – Robert Autrey showed us how we can fix it if we did not want to wait for a fix – he has created an ini file.Still waiting for S.Burpee to get fix for this -
- High School Technology Intiative There is a guide that has been made for the students who receive a laptop. One thing problem – no fees can be charged – there is a caveat in there that the fees are waived. You can only legally charge for textbook loss. But, lawyer said we can do a deposit and return – but we are not doing that. Document has Cost of fair market value costs of laptops – and estimated repair costs. Since laptops are so new, no parts. There is a solid state drive, so should boot up quickly. Parent Form in both English and Spanish for parents to sign. One of rules is that all need to be in a case or backpack. Offered a case for $25. FAQ – listed and after parent meeting there may be more. Acceptable Use Policy – so there is a new AUP for High School. Lots of other documents on how to connect your laptop to wireless, care of laptop, carrying case. Other documents Curriculum Resources – such as online textbooks.Research Resources for RRISD Home Access user names and passwords will have a link so students can get it. (link to Google Doc.) Commonly Used Applications for Pilot Initiative document. There is also a Parent Presentation -
- Common Pass software (Brent at 10:45)
ClearPass/Onboarding - PP Presentation can be found on GrabStuff
Will not be using Microsoft to identify anything - will switch over; when it is our machine, we can login anywhere, etc.
Onboarding - a device brought into can get internet access, difference now? Number of devices on - This lets all the kids to be on RRISD wireless, go to internet, We want them OFF the guest network;
What is supported - XP, windows 7 and upcoming 8- coming in June.
IPAD - Student connects their own device to guest network; follow instructions on how to install - This is certificate - not any software. Then they will have to login with their user name and password. (Separate group for no internet access - they don't need to be doing this) Disconnect from RRISD (forget the network)
Are some catches to this - limited licensing - do it twice a year; kill in Dec.; kill in June; Maximum devices for students - 2, If they have more, then send Brent email to clean it up to add another device.
Have to use SAFARI - not Chrome - just to get on the first time.
Samsung Tablet (similar to other Android) Must have GooglePlay) - Very simple instructions
XP and 7 Machines - student must have admin rights on those machines or profile can't be installed.
Staff may have up to 3 devices; staff registers their devices once a year. Students 3 times - Dec, June, end of Summer School
Generic accounts can't be on Onboard Devices. (unless some grant items such as Ipads are on campus)
Question about device troubleshooting - Brent is going to have a link on how to get connected, etc. But according to BYOD it states that problems, if apps or things not working, are to be up to the owner of device to use. ITS must be diplomatic in how approach that request for help -
- Gmail for students - Tech dept already received the list of all high school students - list of things that are needed to be enabled. OK mail, OKcalendar, OKdocs, NO voice, NO chat, NO sites, Right Now NO picassa (question about if they needed) - , OK maps, sketchup
Question: will students have same email and can they use summer? They will have same email and yes, can use.
Can or Can Not email classmates? Pros/Cons discussed - some say need collaboration, some say bullying would need to be investigated - one example referrals increased because they have to investigate any type of bullying. EANES - decided email not needed. So if they have other emails - do not use RRISD email addresses for career or college, they need to use their own personal email addresses.
Email is not an ALL or Nothing
When do we want those activated?
This is a pilot using HS - after January it is in place, then we go in and request for MS and Elem?(but 13 under law problem)
Student email is the s+ID number
Question - Who is monitoring Filter for inappropriate email - everything still gets logged at Firewall -
Brent - They now have -added Access point in each room (HS)
Access points for 3/4 of all MS -
